English Language Development 3 (ELD 3)
English Language Development 3 (ELD 3) is the third and final level of English for English language learners.  The students continue to develop the listening, reading, writing, and oral fluency skills necessary to function in a general education setting.  Students are introduced to the study of fiction and nonfiction including drama, short stories, novels and poetry.  Students study the Milestones curriculum  (using the level B textbooks and workbooks) and review academic vocabulary throughout the year.  Computer skills are taught, and students take online quizzes and tests, study vocabulary using Rosetta Stone, and write essays, reports, and letters.  Powerpoint presentations are constructed by students and presented orally.  ELD 3 students complete writing assignments for the MVUSD ELD 3 portfolios, which are collected each semester and graded at the district level.  These assignments help to prepare students for the VVHS English 1 portfolios (which students will complete the following year in English 1).  Students are taught and tested on expanded CAHSEE / CST vocabulary and concepts, and continue to take Cornell notes.  This course is a two-period block.  The University of California system accepts one year of ELD as college prep English.
